Traditional Ukadiche Modak for Ganesh Chaturthi

Ukadiche Modak Recipe

Ukadiche Modak is a traditional steamed sweet commonly prepared during Ganesh Chaturthi. It has a soft rice flour covering and a sweet coconut-jaggery filling.

About Ukadiche Modak

Modak is closely associated with Lord Ganesha and is a popular offering during Ganesh Chaturthi. Ukadiche Modak is prepared by making a rice flour dough, filling it with coconut and jaggery, shaping it into a modak and steaming it.

Recipe note: Ingredient quantities can be adjusted according to the number of modaks you want to prepare and your preferred sweetness.

Ukadiche Modak Ingredients

For the Outer Covering

Rice flour, water, a small amount of salt and a little ghee or oil.

For the Filling

Fresh grated coconut and jaggery.

Flavouring

Cardamom powder can be added for flavour.

Optional Ingredients

Dry fruits or other traditional additions can be used according to personal preference.

How to Make Ukadiche Modak

Step 1: Prepare the Filling Cook grated coconut and jaggery together on low to medium heat. Stir until the mixture combines well. Add cardamom powder if desired. Allow the filling to cool.
Step 2: Prepare the Dough Bring water to a boil and add a small amount of salt and ghee or oil. Add rice flour and mix carefully. Cover and allow the mixture to rest briefly.
Step 3: Knead the Dough When the mixture is comfortable to handle, knead it into a soft and smooth dough. Keep the dough covered so that it does not dry.
Step 4: Shape the Modak Take a small portion of dough and flatten it into a thin circle. Place some coconut-jaggery filling in the centre and create folds around the edges.
Step 5: Close the Modak Bring the folds together at the top and seal the modak carefully. Make sure the filling remains inside.
Step 6: Steam Place the shaped modaks in a steamer and steam until the outer covering becomes cooked and slightly translucent.
Step 7: Serve Allow the modaks to cool slightly. They can then be offered during Ganesh Puja as prasad according to your family tradition.

Tips for Soft Modak

Common Modak Problems

Cracks in the Covering

The dough may be too dry. Keep it covered and knead it well to achieve a soft consistency.

Filling Comes Out

Avoid overfilling and make sure the edges are sealed properly before steaming.

Hard Covering

A thick or poorly prepared dough can result in a harder covering. Aim for a soft dough and a relatively thin outer layer.

Filling Too Wet

Cook the coconut-jaggery mixture until it reaches a suitable consistency before using it as the filling.
